The Latin American Religious Alternatives Conference is the main event for reflecting on the religious phenomenon from an academic perspective in the region.

In 2024, thirty years will have passed since the creation of our Association of Social Sciences of Religion in Latin America. Throughout its existence, it has established itself as a privileged space for dialogue and academic discussion among researchers of religion in/about Latin America. Over the years, it has connected different generations of established and emerging scholars, promoted disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, influenced the shaping of regional research agendas, and worked to showcase our specialized production, becoming a reference point for what happens in our Latin American field.

We want to celebrate this trajectory and, at the same time, enhance it by opening our main event, the Conference, to an exchange with colleagues from other regions to position regional contributions in the discussion of religion from the global south and enrich our regional vision by thinking about ourselves in relation and dialogue with other contexts.

In this edition of our Conference, it has been recognized as a Regional Conference of the Association for the History of Religions (IAHR).

The event will be held in collaboration with the Research Committee on Sociology of Religion (RC22) of the International Sociological Association, with whom special activities will be developed.

The Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU), located in Montevideo and other cities of the country, is the oldest private university in Uruguay and the one with the largest coverage in the national territory.

The UCU was initially founded in 1882 by the first Archbishop of Montevideo, Monsignor Mariano Soler. It was later reopened and entrusted to the Society of Jesus in 1985, representing the main work of the Catholic Church in Uruguayan higher education. Its commitment to academic excellence, ideological pluralism, ecumenism and interreligious dialogue have made it a reference institution in the cultural life of Uruguay.

Since its creation, the Catholic University of Uruguay has set itself the challenge of becoming a better and different option in higher education. This has led the institution to focus on areas that had not been considered before and to play an innovative role in the development of new educational methodologies as well as in the evangelization of culture. Today, with 9,000 students enrolled and several dozen academic programs, it is going through a phase of consolidation, in which the university faces the challenge of responding to the new demands of Uruguayan society.

We serve the community through the dissemination of knowledge, the promotion of human formation and the diffusion of culture.
